Summer Skin Survival Guide: Which Aesthetic Treatments Are Safe in Summer?

Heliocare

When the sun makes an appearance, many people assume they need to press pause on all aesthetic treatments until autumn. It's one of the most common questions we hear in clinic:

"Can I still have my treatment in the summer?"

The short answer is yes, but with a few important considerations.

At Somerset Medical Aesthetics, we believe healthy skin should be cared for all year round. While some treatments require a little extra planning during the sunnier months, there's no reason you can't continue investing in your skin throughout the summer.

Can you have anti-wrinkle injections in summer?

Absolutely.

Anti-wrinkle injections are one of the easiest treatments to have during the warmer months because they aren't affected by sun exposure in the same way as treatments that intentionally resurface the skin.

Whether you're preparing for a wedding, holiday or simply want to feel refreshed, anti-wrinkle treatments can help soften lines while maintaining natural facial movement.

After treatment, we simply recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, excessive heat (such as saunas or steam rooms) and lying flat for the first few hours. As always, protecting your skin with a high-factor SPF is essential.

Are skin boosters suitable before a holiday?

Yes, they're actually one of our favourite summer treatments.

Skin boosters work by deeply hydrating the skin from within, improving texture, radiance and overall skin quality rather than adding volume. They can leave your skin looking fresher, healthier and more luminous, making them an excellent option before special occasions or holidays.

We generally recommend allowing around two weeks before any important event or travel, giving any minor swelling or bruising time to settle and allowing the treatment to begin working its magic.

What about SkinPen microneedling?

SkinPen remains one of the most effective treatments for stimulating collagen production, improving acne scarring, reducing fine lines and enhancing overall skin quality.

Many people think microneedling should be avoided completely during summer, but that's not necessarily true.

The treatment itself is perfectly safe during the warmer months, provided you're committed to looking after your skin afterwards. Freshly treated skin is more sensitive to UV exposure, so diligent sun protection is absolutely essential.

Following your treatment we recommend:

  • Wearing a broad-spectrum SPF 50 every day.

  • Avoiding direct sun exposure while your skin heals.

  • Wearing a wide-brimmed hat if you're spending time outdoors.

  • Following your personalised aftercare advice carefully.

If you have a beach holiday or prolonged sun exposure planned in the next couple of weeks, it may be worth scheduling your treatment either before or after your trip. We'll always advise you on the safest timing during your consultation.

Should chemical peels wait until autumn?

Chemical peels can still be performed during summer, but timing and aftercare become even more important.

As peels remove damaged surface skin cells, your skin becomes temporarily more susceptible to UV damage while it heals. For this reason, we may recommend postponing treatment if you're about to spend long days in intense sunshine or travelling somewhere particularly hot.

If you're staying in the UK and are happy to be diligent with sun protection, many superficial peels can still be performed safely.

Every patient's skin is different, which is why we'll always tailor our recommendations to your lifestyle and upcoming plans.

Why SPF is your most important skincare product

No matter which treatment you choose, daily sun protection is one of the best investments you can make in your skin.

UV exposure is responsible for up to 80% of visible skin ageing, contributing to:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Pigmentation

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Loss of collagen

  • Reduced skin elasticity

Using a broad-spectrum SPF 50 every day doesn't just protect your skin after treatment, it helps preserve your results for longer.

Every treatment plan is personalised

At Somerset Medical Aesthetics, we never take a one-size-fits-all approach.

Before recommending any treatment, we'll discuss your skin concerns, upcoming holidays, outdoor activities and lifestyle so we can plan treatments around your schedule.

Sometimes that means adjusting the timing of a treatment, and sometimes it means recommending an alternative that better suits your plans.

Our priority is always achieving beautiful, natural-looking results while keeping your skin healthy and protected.
